How do we prepare Huntsville for the next generation?

Huntsville is growing, and we should be thinking about what kind of community we want to be ten or twenty years from now. My work has taken me across Canada and around the world, and one thing I've learned is that we don't have to figure everything out ourselves. Other communities are facing many of the same challenges we are. We should be looking for the best ideas, learning from what has worked elsewhere, and bringing those lessons home to Huntsville.

We also need to build a stronger year-round economy. Tourism will always be an important part of Huntsville, but we can find new reasons for people to visit throughout the year while also diversifying beyond tourism. That means supporting the entrepreneurs and small businesses already here while actively looking at new industries and professional, knowledge-based businesses that can operate from Muskoka and create good year-round jobs.

A more diverse economy can strengthen the whole community. Good jobs help young people build a future here, support local businesses, and attract working families and professionals. That, in turn, can make Huntsville a more attractive place for doctors, healthcare workers, educators, and other people we need.

But economic growth only works if people can afford to live here. Housing, infrastructure, transportation, and community services need to keep pace. We should encourage responsible development that adds the kinds of homes our community actually needs while protecting our lakes, forests, and environment. Growth shouldn't mean losing what makes Huntsville special.

And Huntsville shouldn't try to do all of this alone. We need to build strong relationships with the District, neighbouring municipalities, the Province, the federal government, and the private and non-profit sectors. When funding, programs, partnerships, or new opportunities are available, Huntsville should be at the table — and fighting for its fair share.

Being future ready means looking beyond the next budget or election. It means learning from the best, bringing new opportunities home, building a more diverse economy, planning responsibly, and making sure the next generation can build their future here too.
