Are we getting the best value for our tax dollars?

Taxes have gone up significantly, and families and businesses are feeling it. At the same time, the cost of almost everything the Town buys and builds has gone up too. There are no easy answers, but Council has a responsibility to make every dollar work harder.

That means setting clear priorities, finding savings where we can, planning ahead instead of paying more later, and being open about where your money goes. It also means being much more aggressive about securing grants and funding from provincial, federal, and other programs so Huntsville taxpayers aren't carrying the full cost of projects on their own.

I also believe residents should have a stronger voice in the decisions that affect their taxes. Before major spending decisions are made, we should do a better job of explaining the choices, the costs, and the trade-offs — and give people a meaningful opportunity to be heard. You shouldn't need to understand a 200-page budget to know where your tax dollars are going or why Council is spending them.

We should review staffing and operations as part of this work. There may be positions or costs we can reduce, but those decisions should be made carefully, not simply to meet a campaign promise. Town employees are people with families, and cuts can also affect the services residents depend on. We should first ask what work needs to be done, whether it can be done better or more efficiently, and then make responsible decisions.

For me, responsible financial management isn't simply about spending less. It's about spending wisely, finding every dollar available, involving our community, planning for growth, and making every tax dollar count.
